The tragedy of violence against women

Silent Victims
November 2000

Last year’s altar, which was also displayed at La Peña gallery, was dedicated to victims of gender violence.  We dedicated the altar to:

  • every little girl whose innocence has been violated;
  • every woman whose trust has been abuse;
  • every married woman whose love has been exploited;
  • every woman of color who suffers the double victimization of racism and sexism;
  • every immigrant woman who suffers in silence;
  • every woman who has died along the Texas/Mexican border;
  • every little girl who will learn to devalue herself as a human being.

The altar included miniature crosses that bore the names of some of the women and girls who have perished in Juárez, México.

The violence for the most part continues to go unpunished and scapegoats are used to hide investigative flaws. We dedicate this image to the memory of the latest victims of misogyny and institutional indifference: Guadalupe, Verónica, Bárbara, Mayra Juliana, Laura Berenice, Claudia Ivette, and María de los Ángeles, and we join our Mexican sisters in demanding an END TO THE MASSACRE OF WOMEN AND GIRLS!

The altar included miniature crosses that bore the names of some of the women and girls who have perished in Juárez, México.

In Austin, the altar was on exhibit at La Peña Art Gallery, 227 Congress Ave.
