The secret of the volunteer movement is in the people themselves, in the leadership of the movement and the coordinators of volunteer groups and in the space of human and working relationships that they create. The management team is the people with whom the volunteers can open up and realize their motivation, that is, self-actualize. The secret, of course, is that we are doing a good deed together. As a result, the volunteers do not so much solve the tasks that we set before them, as they themselves choose what to do. A specific hospital and its patients attract volunteers, but we do not distribute them there.

“Community” is an absolutely horizontal and ideally democratic model of a volunteer organization. A distinctive and fundamentally important feature of the “Community” is the primacy of common values and meanings over everything else. Management power belongs to all participants, decisions are made jointly, responsibility for the work and existence of the organization also rests with all participants, they also provide the necessary resources. From here comes equality within the organization. The “community” is able to carry out any activity if it embodies the necessary values and meanings: to solve one-time spontaneous tasks, to implement projects and programs, to carry out process activities. In this model, internal motivation is extremely deep and holistic, any member of the organization can be a volunteer, if necessary, full mobilization is possible, where everyone will be volunteers.

In the social sphere, “communities” are mostly represented by beginning initiative groups, whose members responded very deeply and emotionally to someone’s pain or loneliness, or the hopelessness of life. For example, the irresistible desire of a group of like-minded people (employees of one company) to brighten up the life of orphans in a distant and very poor orphanage compels them to do everything on their own and together. They seem to live outside of contact with the outside world. Everyone invests their money to the best of their ability, design trips themselves, buy gifts. Everyone contributes, everyone has the right to vote. Such “communities” can exist for a very long time – for years, they can not popularize their work in any way, they can do their business almost in secret, they can not attract new participants. The main condition is the resourcefulness of the participants, both material and emotional.
